Just to tell you that our "base camp" was in Cangas de Onis. There we stayed at the Monteverde Hotel, centrally located, close to the bus station where you can catch the bus going up to the lakes. The rooms are good and breakfast is included.
We spent a few days here in August 2008. It is a hotel that was recently opened, modern, and has every comfort including the sea and the mountains. It is Next to Covadonga in the Picos de Europa, the hotel is great spot to enjoy tranquility in a rural setting. It offers deals in all seasons, including Sella river descents, which I made in a beautiful day of summer in all its beauty naturally, or also the route of the Cares, etc.. I never tire of saying that Asturias is completely a natural paradise with a capital, where as I can do anything and go places and the villages are like a postcard, not only on the coast in summer but inside in any season.
