Small family hotel with 20 rooms located in the heart of the city but very quiet because it's above a pedestrian street. Simply decorated, they have managed to keep the essence of antique furniture without feeling old or outdated. A comfortable hotel, very clean and an excellent deal. The owners themselves waited on us: A Spanish woman married to a Portuguese man who have just taken the business on a few months ago. In addition, the rooms (especially those with a balcony overlooking the street) are very nice, they have a small living room with a fireplace, ideal for autumn and winter evenings and a small terrace for the summer.
We stayed at the Hotel Melia Braga because we found a significant discount on a travel website. It's a little far from the centre, about 40 minutes by foot. There's a bus stop nearby, but the last bus goes to town at 20:30. The reception is an open space decorated in white and modern furniture. We stayed in a triple room on the top floor. The views were beautiful. There was a double bed, one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in, and a sofa bed, which was also very comfortable. The room had many details, the lights are controlled by embedded panels on the bedside tables. There was a safe, minibar, plasma TV, hairdryer, shower and tub. The room and bathroom were only separated by glass (impractical if you're sharing the room with friends). The hotel featured a spa, Jacuzzi, indoor pool, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, cold/hot baths, and jet showers. A real delight. Neither the spa nor the gym are included in the room rate. The staff was helpful and accommodating. The Meliã Braga is an excellent choice, but not suitable for all budgets.
I stayed for a weekend at this 3-star hotel, which was not bad, and pretty convenient. It was the best value that I saw online, 19 euros per person per night with breakfast included, despite it being a holiday weekend. We arrived around 11 am, and had to wait for 10 minutes as the room wasn't ready yet. The room was quite spacious, with three 90cm beds and a good desk. The wardrobe was a bit small, and so was the TV, hung from a bracket on the wall (apparently it has satellite channels, but I don't know as we didn't even turn it on). The furniture was nothing special, but it was functional and modern.
The room was perfectly clean, but there was a strange smell - like there was a problem with the pipes, but the bathroom was okay. The floor was carpeted, and there was air conditioning and heating. It was very bright, with one wall being all windows. The trouble is that there was no soundproofing or shutters, so it was noisy at night, and bright at dawn. I didn't like the bed too much, as I prefer hard mattresses and it sank quite a bit. The bathroom was spacious, with a large bath, toilet, bidet, and a marble countertop with built-in sink and plenty of counter space. There weren't many amenities - just a bar of soap in the sink, a gel dispenser on the wall of the tub, and a hairdryer.
Hot water came fast and with plenty of pressure, but there was only a shower curtain, not a screen door, and it could have done with a little more lighting. On the ground floor, next to the reception desk, there were vending machines for coffee, cold drinks and snacks. There was a small TV room, with a computer with free internet (wifi was 3 euros an hour or 12 a day, and only in this area), a little bar and breakfast room. The breakfast was served until 10am, but one day we went down at 9:30 and they weren't repleneshing things. Regarding the location, it's on one of the main commercial streets, but it's not quite in the heart of the city - 10 minutes walk away. Be careful parking under the trees, as they produce a sticky liquid that will leave your car quite a mess. In summary, an okay 3-star, but not amazing.
The hotel is located in the city center, close to the Exhibitions Park. It is a cultural city that offers a variety of different places to visit. As for the hotel, the fact that it's close to transport makes it an ideal place for both travelers on business trips and for leisure.
When I was in Braga I stayed four nights in this hotel I chose, to be honest, because it was the cheapest of the ones I found on minube. I have to say I was very pleased with the price/quality. Of course: It's not the best in the world, it's a little out-dated in decor and doesn't have a large reception hall or rooms to relax on a sofa. The mattresses in the rooms are not the most comfortable and the bathrooms have gone many years without an update. Still, I must say that there are several very positive things in this hotel to warrant staying there: It is very centrally located, has very good service and personal attention (in fact, a 10 for the hotel staff) they have a computer to check the internet for free with no time limit, the rooms are super spacious (they one they gave me was as big as my apartment in Madrid) and the housekeeping was good. Something a bit strange: The hotel is accessed from within the shopping center, so that at night they close and you have to ring a bell to enter. It is a little strange walking through a mall to find an elevator that takes you directly to the reception of a hotel, but it is quite safe.
