I've stayed at this hotel several times for a few days at a time in summer. The Confortel Badajoz is located on the outskirts of Badajoz, in the neighborhood of Villafranco de Guadiana. In about 10 minutes by car you reach Badajoz. The area where it is located has nothing of special interest because it is a residential area. The main reason for choosing this hotel has always been its huge pool; in summer, there aren't many people here, and you can really relax and get away from it all. In fact, I've never seen more than 7 or 8 people using the pool. Despite having four stars, the rooms aren't great, and need to be renovated. The mattresses are too soft, and the rustic furniture could do with being replaced. The bathroom has no screen, but instead a shower curtain in the tub. Over the years, the hotel has been cutting back on services. For example, there used to be a bar open all day, with lots of atmosphere, but now it only opens at specific times. So to overcome this, they installed a complimentary mini bar in the rooms, with plenty of drinks replenished daily. But last year, most of the drinks had been removed, and instead there were only 4 bottles of 33cl water. The breakfast buffet is quite varied, although the quality is not what you would expect from a 4 star. Yes, the hotel has good prices, a double room usually ranges between 45 € and 60 €, depending on advance booking.
In August 2010, I spent two nights at this hotel, which is about 10 minutes drive from Badajoz on the highway that leads to Lisbon. The hotel can be seen from the road, as it's located in a service area, with a gas station, restaurant, and more. The reception and public areas are quite nice, all decorated in dark colours in a modern style. The rooms are well-decorated, also modern, and are spacious, with everything you need, including free wifi. The buffet breakfast was quite varied, with donuts and pastries (very fresh) at the bakery. We spent about 60 € for the night, a good price.
The Hotel São João De Deus (Elvas) is located within the ancient walls of the city of Elvas, just minutes from the border. There are 56 spacious rooms. In order to start the day they offer a tasty breakfast in the comfort of your room or the pool. The restaurant serves the best of Portuguese cuisine and the bar offers all kinds of drinks.
During my time in Badajoz, I stayed at the 4-star Hotel Zurbaran, part of the Husa chain, on the banks of the Guadiana River, opposite the Bastion Saint Vincent and steps from the Puerta de Palmas. It is easily reached from the highway to the Ruta de la Plata, at the entrance to the city; from here, you could easily walk anywhere in the old town. Although the building doesn't look like much, the hotel inside was great, and was pretty well priced at 55 € for a double room (without breakfast).
The hotel is huge, with 213 rooms, a restaurant, cafe, nightclub, TV room, a huge lobby and conference room. One of the best things, especially if you go in August like me, is that it has an outdoor pool, not very big but enough to cool off from the sweltering heat, and with free sunbeds around. I didn't try the restaurant, but it looked great, with two dining rooms - one more rustic, the other with a terrace. The room was spacious with a double bed, wardrobe (with safe), writing desk, wifi, minibar and cable TV. The decor was simple but nice, and it was very clean. The bathroom looked brand new, all gleaming marble, with a large bath, toilet and sink. It is certainly a very good option if you're visiting Badajoz, as the hotel has all the amenities you could ask for, the room is very comfortable, and is in good place despite not being in the very center. And above all, at a great price. They have underground parking, but there's also plenty of space on the street.
I stayed at this hotel, and I was treated very well indeed. It's close to the border with Portugal, in a great location. It's next to the faculties area, and close to the river Guadiana. We went for a walk in the centre of Badajoz and enjoyed some beers, while the friendly locals showed us where to go, and what to do. I recommend a visit - we had a good weekend, without entering the casino right next door.
